Sites of Interest
Kaleici is the historical centre of the city which embraced many civilisations over the years. It has now been completely transformed into an attractive tourist centre with hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants and shopping centres. Despite this modern change, the centre still keeps its original ancient archaeological characteristics. The restorative work in Kaleici won the Golden Apple Prize which is the Oscar of tourism.
The prize winning Antalya museum and one of the most notable archaeological museums in the world is the only museum in Turkey with a children’s department exhibiting ancient monuments appealing to children.
Hadrian’s Gate is an ornamental marble arch constructed in the 2nd century BC by the Romans n honour of the emperor Hadrian. Another site to see is the fluted minaret (Yivli Minare) of the 13th century which was built by the Seljuks. It is decorated with dark blue and turquoise tiles and it was this minaret which eventually became the symbol of the city.
Other important places to see in the city are; Karatay Medresesi, Hidirlik Tower, Ahi Yusuf Mescidi, Iskele Mosque, Murat Pasa Mosque, Tekeli Mehmet Pasa Mosque, Balibey Mosque, Musellim Mosque, Seyh Sinan Efendi Mosque and the Osman Efendi Mosque. |
